Chapter One Introduction
This thesis will present a contrastive study of Chinese-English social address forms (Hereinafter called SAF)under a perspective of Intercultural Communication.It will not simply display the differences and similarities between them but analyze the reasons from sociolinguistic theories and cultural roots for the sake of better understanding the knowledge of Chinese-English SAF and its cultural differences.
1.1 Significance of the Research        
In a broad sense,language is an inseparable part of culture or we can say language is one kind of semiotic of culture.So as SAF,it is also one aspect of culture and it can not be segmented with such factors which are the components of cultures as geography,history, religion,education,and social customs and so on.Therefore,it is necessary for us to know what it is and know why it is like this and deeply analyse the complex reasons that form those differences either from theoretical aspect or from the cultural aspect.
Nowadays,more and more people or all rank of social fields encounter these intercultural communication occasions much more frequently,for example,the interaction between ordinary Chinese people and their western foreign friends,the business negotiations between Chinese corporations and their international partners,the exchange visitors between different countries and the tourists and so on.So,from this point,for the least practical function,the thesis will state that how essential it is to choose and apply the appropriate SAF especially when people communicate with somebody who is just the one that he/she wants to maintain and keep social relationships with.
Besides,by contrast study on Chinese-English SAF,the thesis clearly shows us the differences and similarities,which will improve our intercultural communication awareness,enhance our intercultural communication competence and minimize the occurrence of pragmatic failures.In the point of view that,it is never too late to learn the Chinese-English SAF for everything changes with time.All what we do here is inevitable to be out of time or being part of cultural stereotype,so it is also important for us to take some measures to avoid it as best as we can.
