Chapter one Introduction

1.1 The Research Orientation and Rationale of This thesis
From the very day since its bom, netspeak shown tremendous power in generationand transmission, it was first emerged in the western world for the informationtechnology and internet was originated in the English speaking countries. That is also thereason why the first netspeak used on the internet was in English, though it is difficult tofigure out which one is the very first among the English netspeaks. However, one thing isfor sure that with the rapid spreading of information technology and internet, netspeakstransformed in different languages and spread themselves rapidly among thecommunications of internet users from different countries.From the perspective of memetic function and cultural connotation, netspeak can bedivided into three major categories, which are official professional terms of the networkmanagement agency; the network related special terms; and the words and symptomsused by the internet population including the CMC communication field like BBC andinternet chat room.、When it comes to English netspeak, and based on these three categories, this thesismainly takes the third part of the English netspeak as the research object, and focus onthe replication and parody of it from the memetic perspective. 1.2 The Theoretical Framework of This Thesis
Memetics is the theoretical basis of this thesis，it is a theory of mental content basedon an analogy with Darwinian evolution, and the theory originates from and becomeswidely accepted with the popularization of Richard Dawkins' book The Selfish Genepublished in 1976. It purports to be an approach to evolutionary models of culturalinformation transfer.The meme，according to the theory of Darwin, basically refers to a gene，in the earlyemerging time of memetics，it only refers to the gene in the field of genetics. With thefurther development of this theory, both the connotation and denotation were broadened;the concept of meme as well as the theory itself was introduced into ； different fields.When it comes to the field of human culture，meme was conceived as a "unit of culture"with its connotation including, an idea，belief, pattern of behavior, etc. While accordingto the definition of memes，meme is hosted in the individuals' minds，as the innerconcept of a person, a meme in the field of culture, perhaps be a word or a figure，apartfrom the inherent meme in the brain of the individuals，which bears the ability ofself-productivity, thereby memes can jump from mind to mind and transfer among people.In his book The Selfish Gene (1976)，the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins usedthe term meme to describe a unit of human cultural transmissiqn analogous to the gene,arguing that replication also happens in culture, albeit in a different sense.
