摘要:本文是英语论文范文,Thispart of study is easy to be done as the author is an in-service teacher with Xi'an ForeignTrade Vocational College. Therefore, related data could be collected during the teachingprocess by sending questionnaires to students.

Chapter One: Introduction


1.1 Motivation of doing this research
Thanks to the guidance of Professor Tian Bing,the author had a chance to comeinto contact with the field of lexicography. In reading the book Research on the DesignFeatures of Advanced Learner's English Dictionary (Tian Bing, Chen Guohua 2009),the author was inspired by the unique research perspective and the diversified researchmethods. Besides,another two books recommended by Prof. Tian - Dictionaries: the artand craft of lexicography (Sydney 1. Landau 2001) and The Oxford Guide to PracticalLexicography (B. T. Sue Atkins,Michael Rundell 2008) are also the inspiration andguidance of this thesis. From them more lexicographical theories have been leamt and asystematic concept about dictionary and lexicography has been formed in the author'smind. After a careful digestion, the author decided to do a research on the effectivenessof the examples of The Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner 's English Dictionary (5thedition).Firstly, the motivation of researching on CCALED comes from the author'sexperience as a user of the dictionary. Once as an English learner, the author admiredvery much the clear and friendly fUll-sentence definitions in CCALED which can makelearners understand the words in a native way. Especially, the author appreciated theauthentic examples selected from the corpus because they can make learners exposed tothe original taste and flavor of English. However, some examples usually contain a fewhigh-leveled words and the contexts often bear certain cultural background. This couldmake the examples hard to understand which will in turn influence learners,understanding about the target words. On the other hand, this could encourage them togo on to check the high-leveled words to enlarge their vocabulary or to refer to morematerials to leam about the related cultural background.

1.2 Significance of this research
The significance of this research mainly lies in two aspects - one is that it will be aReference on whether the CCALED,s examples are effective for advanced Englishlearners in China; the other one it that the author hopes that the thesis will be a usefulmaterial for the research of practical lexicography.Firstly,the significance of studying the learner's English dictionary lies in its ownpurpose _ it is designed for normative English learners. With a history of over halfcentury,the learner's English dictionary has mature compiling technologies and theories. Especially, there have been a large amount of research fruits in Britain, America andJapan. By contrast,relative researches in China are not thorough or systematic enough.In this light,lexicographers in China need to do more research on the successfuldictionaries edited by the English-speaking countries. On the other hand, China hasnumerous English learners ranging from kindergarten children to enthusiastic learnerswith tertiary education. The popularity of English in China requires a large supply ofpedagogical English dictionaries which are the most important learning tools forEnglish learners. These years, some advanced learner's English dictionaries such asCCALED and The Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary dominatedthe market in China.
