Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Consequently, it is common to see the high rate of English teachers’turnover, as many of them try every mean to work in cities. There is still the obsolete idea of“learning English is useless”, which means earning money and gaining experience in citiesseems a better choice. Beyond that, the customs and out-dated thoughts in rural areas, dialectand manners, for instance, play a negative effect in learning English to a certain degree. Moreimportantly, private enterprises pursue financial interests, and rarely invest in rural middleschools. The government investment in rural education is also not enough, which brings aboutthe problems such as funding shortage, inferior teacher quality, low salary etc.Next, previous surveys favor that the shortage of qualified English teachers is one of themost notable problems in rural middle schools (Liu Junfeng 2003; Chen Yingying 2004). Inmy practice school, none of the 7 English teachers have accepted the full-time collegeeducation, as they got the bachelor’s degree by correspondence learning or self-undergraduateEnglish test. The existing English teacher staff is far from better-educated and professional. Itmainly shows up in: (1) some teachers’ ideas are old hat; they stick to the inherent experience,and do not attach importance to education reform. (2) The teachers misuse new materials tothe existing one-sided understanding of English language teaching materials and methods.Specifically speaking, some teachers put too much emphasis on vocabulary and grammarrules to explain and memorize, but have no intention of encouraging the students’ motivationand interest, leading to their difficulty in comprehending and actively participating inlanguage practice, and thus the emotional weariness comes into being. (3) The teachers arenot so competent. Especially for the English teachers whose pronunciation, listening andspeaking are not good, they cannot calmly organize classroom and carry out activities easily,and then students’ “dumb English” phenomenon appears.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
The study is of great importance. A tremendous amount of researches on teachers’ stresshave been found, but a lack of data representing English teachers in junior middle schools. Inparticular, there is a gap in the available data with respect to rural areas. Therefore, my focusis to investigate rural middle school English teachers’ perceptions of stress. This study may behelpful for the educators, administrators, English teachers and parents who are the roleplayers in the educational system. The paper introduces Maslow’s hierarchy of human needstheory and tries to explore its influence on the causes of English teachers’ stress, as well asthe relationship between stress and needs, for the sake of providing suggestions for alleviatingteachers’ occupational stress, and improving the living condition of rural teachers, so as toenhance China’s education revolution and development.During my internship, the teachers always provide me with hearty advice to conclude theconversation, that is, do not ever try to be a rural middle school teacher. It is a great shock tome, for my major field is middle school education. Why does the career of being a teacherencounter such a dilemma in reality?
