Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Present Study
With the development of our country, we have more and more frequent contactwith other foreign countries. In this way, communication in English has become muchmore significant, at the same time,English writing plays an essential role in languagelearning. Meanwhile, writing is the language tool between writer and reader so thatthe writer can express their thoughts and ideas through writing while the reader canunderstand the writer's thoughts.The International education's teaching goal of high school is to supply studentswho have practical knowledge and skills to study the international courses, study theliving,thinking and studying style the western people act and behave as aninternational citizen. If we don't leam how to write in the right way,we can't learnlanguages effectively. By writing, the students can deliver what they have learned andthus improve their grammatical knowledge, new words and phrases and sentencestructures, etc.English writing for the majority of the Chinese learners has always been theimportant and difficult skills to improve. The students can not only study grammarand vocabulary knowledge, but also investigate themselves in writing style, paragraphorganization and discourse structure and other aspects of knowledge which reflect andlay out the students' logical thinking ability. However, in the teaching practice, thestudents' writing ability is generally not satisfactory even international high schoolstudents. Although they have already had the ability to control a large vocabulary andgrammar knowledge system, their writing is always loose in structure, lacking inclarity, with poor consistency. The main reason lies in the sentences,which lack ofcohesion between appropriateness and effectiveness. Sometimes students only thinkin Chinese way, such as listing words in accordance with the order of Chinese andarranging the paragraph in one sentence, which has strong impact on the wholequality of the article.

1.2 The Purpose of the Study
The study mainly focuses on students' competence in using cohesive devices andthe understanding of using cohesion and coherence in students' writing. The aim ofinternational education of high school is to improve the students' ability to make useof English properly,especially in speaking and writing. Discourse coherence is theoverall level of discourse analysis,such as the relation between the meanings ofsentences. As writing is a process, we mainly base on two points: First,take the wholediscourse as a goal, which is based on sentence. Second,take the sentence in nonlanguage knowledge as standard,which is based on the language knowledge. Both aremultidimensional and debate certificate course. In teaching writing, teachers shouldguide students to read more,practice to avoid their first language interference. At thesame time, teacher could evaluate a variety of forms, such as the cultivation oflanguage ability and writing skills of students by peer revision. In the process ofEnglish teaching, writing is a very important part, and it is also a difficult question.Although there are some skills that can be taught to students, writing is much morethan an art and skill. Writing is an expression of a thought and the mastery of thelanguage knowledge.
