Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the Research
Translation teaching development largely depends on the evolution of translation andtranslation theory. Meanwhile，translation theory is considered as one of important factors thatpush the development of translation and affects the whole process of translation teaching.However, the current situation of translation teaching is worrying. A fairly large number ofstudents, teachers and even some professional scholars thought translation theory useless anddoubted the necessity of translation theory teaching. According to the result of the investigationof English majors’ translation teaching which was published in Shanghai Journal ofTranslation(2005,1), up to 76% of senior students in universities who have finished theircompulsory translation courses thought translation theories useless or nothing in the realtranslation practices. Only 24% of the students held the idea that translation theory useful tosome extent. The quantity of students, who ignored the functions of translation theory, is threetimes as many as the students who supported translation theory. There are a number of teacherswho teach translation courses in universities still cannot realize the importance of the translationtheory. It makes the translation theory teaching become a difficult point in translation teaching. Itis necessary to find out an effective way to help students and teachers to understand translationtheory comprehensively and effectively.

1.2 Significance of the Research
Even though the proportion of translation theory in translation textbooks is increasing, howto teach translation theory appropriately and effectively is still a big problem which has been hotlydebated in the field of translation teaching in a long time.This thesis presents a research project on translation theory teaching among English majorstudents based on translation memetics. Meme originated from a biological term “gene” which isconsidered as the unit of culture. Gene is to biological heredity what meme is to culturalpropagation. Chesterman applied the concept of meme into the field of translation and named ittranslation memetics. According to the view of translation memetics, the main difference betweenhuman and machine is that human are able to acquire the concept of theory, but machines cannot.The improvement of translation theory is the inner motivation of the boom of the translation.This topic is significant because the previous studies just emphasize on discussing thetranslation theory teaching from the general view. The author of this thesis tried to find a newway based on translation memetics to teach translation theory among English major students.Translation memetics is a theory which highlights the importance of translation theory and thenecessity of translation theory teaching. Under the guidance of translation memetics, theresearcher hypothesized that translation theory teaching method based on translation memetics ishelpful in the process of translation teaching. The students will get a new understanding of the translation theory’s functions and improve their translation competences or translation skills.An empirical translation teaching was designed in this study.
