Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Rationale of the Research
The study of word classes or parts of speech (POS for short) is one of the most important and controversial topics in linguistics. Word classes are taken as the foundation of grammar studies. Therefore, dictionaries with word class labeling are absolutely necessary. It is one of the elementary and important information dictionaries are supposed to provide, along with spelling, pronunciation, meaning, pragmatic information, etc. Jackson (1985, p. 55) asserts that “if a dictionary gives no other information of a grammatical nature, it is expected to indicate which part-of-speech or word-class a lexical item belongs to”. So, Wang Renqiang (2006b) holds that it plays an important role in accurate construal of lexical meanings, especially for bilingual dictionaries, and it is good to improve the symmetry and consistency between source lexemes and equivalents so as to further contribute to the consistency between exemplifications and word classes. Word class labeling is definitely a necessity in the compilation of Chinese-English dictionaries (C-E dictionaries for short), which is an important and helpful indicator of the effectiveness, practicability and accuracy of a C-E dictionary. Compared with Chinese dictionaries whose main users are mostly Chinese people, C-E dictionaries can not only benefit the native Chinese a lot in C- E translation, but can also help the foreigner to learn Chinese in a better way. When it comes to the positive effect of word class labeling on C-E dictionaries, Wang Renqiang & Zhang Yihua (2006) holds that “the number of senses and functional senses is observably higher in C-E dictionaries with word class labeling than in unlabeled ones, and the former tend to be better in providing the accurate English equivalents”.

Second, it is to check out if the word classes of antonymous compounds are properly labeled in C-E dictionaries, and what kinds of words are mostly improperly labeled. Third, it is to strengthen the assertion that word class categorization should be based on corpus-based usage pattern surveys to discover its
