Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the
thesis was to explore the connotative meanings and the problems of the Chinese word of “Xi” in its English translations in the context of cultural differences. In the view of semantics, the connotative meanings of a word refers to the additional meanings that a word or its phrase has beyond its conceptual meanings, one of the seven types of the division of meaning by Geoffrey Leech. The definition of the connotative meaning means that it is the meaning of a word that can show the emotions and attitudes of its user associated with a word or a phrase relatively. In the connotative meanings, cultural specific meanings, as known as the folk-custom meaning, symbolic meanings are there within in the cultural perspective, these meanings of a word are the signified meaning of words tinged with an ethnic group’s cultural connotation. In another sense, they have the features of the affective meaning, reflective meaning, social meaning, collocative meaning and thematic meaning. The cultural loaded words in a language system are the specific words with the roots in the
history, social activities, they are the words among the most popular words, among the fixed phrases or idioms used in the daily communications, and some of connotative meanings in them given to by its people, users, or even with the changes of time. As these meanings are not as objective as the denotative type, the connotative meanings, cultural-specific meanings or symbolic meaning of a word in the communications are often not very clear, and the blur in their translated version of a saying often causes problems in understanding, that is to say the none-native speakers can not get the translated meanings or grow a wrong picture from it, or even refuse to accept the concept.

1.2 Historical Background of the Problem
In previous studies translators paid more attention to the literary translation and specialized-subject translation. Many researches show that literary translation including novel translation, scientific and technical article translation, poem translation and idiom translation is very popular with language scholars. However, poetic translation and idiom translation are poor in translation studies because previous studies exists shortage in explaining the acceptability of translation and unknowing of target language readers.
