Chapter One Introduction 

Address forms, used to indicate the social status of a person and the relationship between  the  addresser  and  the  addressed  involved  in  our  communication,  are  an indispensible part in our daily communication. This thesis analyzes the metonymic mechanism of the address forms and makes a study exemplified by data from the Chinese classical work Romance of the Three Kingdoms, intending to put forward a systematic metonymic models of the underlying the producing process of the address forms.

1.1 Motivation of the Study
The reasons for studying the address forms from the metonymic perspective with data collected in Romance of the Three Kingdoms are as follows: Firstly, the use of address forms pervades in our daily communication and they can subtly indicate the social status of a person and the relationship between two people involved in the communication. The study of the address forms are meaningful in  properly  addressing  a  person  and  thus  enhancing  the  effectiveness  of  the interpersonal communication. Secondly, the previous studies mainly focus on the social-linguistic perspective, semantic perspective and cultural perspective, and the cognitive process of the issue has not attracted much attention. While metonymy, the major process among the cognitive means of the understanding of the address forms, need more researches. What  needs  attention  is  that  the  process  shares  little  similarities  with  the  traditional  rhetorical  concepts  like  personification,  parallel,  on  the  contrary,  it involves a cognitive process to most degree.  Thus  the  thesis  intends  to  explore  the  cognitive  mechanism  underlying  the address forms with the specific analysis of the metonymic models and then divides them into three categories.

1.2 Objectives of the Study
The objectives of the study are as follows: （1）The thesis intends to explore the metonymic mechanism underlying the producing process of the address forms. （2）The thesis figures out three metonymic models of the producing process of the  address  forms  and  further  elaborates  those  models  through  examples  from Romance of the Three Kingdoms. （3）The  thesis  conducts  this  study  with  the  intention  of  enhancing  the effectiveness  of  communication  and  properly  choosing  of  address  forms  after  a systematic study.

1.3 Methodology and Data Collection of the Study
Both qualitative and quantitative methods will be adopted in this study. For qualitative study, this paper will analyze address forms subjecting to the definition and study them from the cognitive perspective for a systematic study of the underlying metonymic models. As for quantitative study, data analysis of the address forms will be employed. The address forms selected from Romance of the Three Kingdoms are used as exemplifications.
