摘要:本文是英语论文范文,本文以保罗埃克曼的面部表情理论为理论框架,利用描述及案例分析的方法来分析《别对我撒谎》中的一些具有代表性的面部表情及其所表现的情绪,通过对面部各个细节如眉毛、眼睑、瞳孔、脸颊、鼻翼、鼻孔、嘴巴、嘴唇等部分的描述来验证面部表情理论是如何在剧中体现的。

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
Facial expression is an important part in nonverbal communication which playsan important role in daily communication. Since the emerging of human beings on theearth, nonverbal communication has become a useful tool for people to communicatewith each other, which appears much earlier than characters were invented. Evidencecan be found from ancient hieroglyph due to the development of archaeology.According to Mehrabian (1972), only 7% of meaning is communicated by verbalchannels, about 38% of meaning is delivered by paralanguage, and 55% of meaning istransmitted by nonverbal factors such as gesture, posture, facial expression.A newborn baby can express his or her feelings and emotions by voice, postures, gestures ortouching, which all belong to nonverbal factors. In daily life, nonverbal factors arealso filled in social communication, it is important for one to master the essence ofnonverbal communication skills including facial expression, whether in businessnegotiation, international reception, criminal investigation or ordinary conversation.Most of the time, one can distinguish lies from the verbal communication throughnonverbal factors. And at the same time, unnecessary misunderstanding can beavoided by acquiring the knowledge of true meaning in nonverbal communication.

1.2 Significance and Purpose
By observing and comparing nonverbal factors on human being’s face, one cancatch the speaker’s true thought immediately. If the speaker’s speech is contrary to hisor her facial expression, it is much possible that he or she is lying. Distinguishing lieshidden in nonverbal communication can also help people avoid potential dangers andreduce losses. Communication is necessary to everyone in the society, no matter whoyou are or what you do, so it is very important to know something about nonverbalcommunication.A person may hide his or her true intentions and pretend to support your idea bywords, but the nonverbal factors do not lie at all, regardless of knowledge, ability orexperience. At the same time, forms of communication are becoming more complicated with the development of social civilization.In the thesis, American TV series Lie to Me is the study object. The author triesto summarize the different meanings of corresponding nonverbal factors on the faceby analyzing and exploring the facial expressions on the screen. After understandingthe secrets of nonverbal factors, people can catch the true information from others andmake communication more convenient with each other.

CHAPTER TWO LITERATURE REVIEW

Charles Darwin published his book The Expression of Emotions in Man andAnimals in 1872, in which he suggested that expression of emotions is universal,people would express one emotion in the same way on their faces, regardless of theirgender, nationality, race culture, etc (Darwin, 1872). It proved that the expression ofemotions is learned not under special cultural background, but with human nature. Inrecent years, a lot of scholars have done numerous of studies on facial expression.Representatives are Paul Ekman, Joe Navaro, Jiang Zhenyu. These scholars havemade great contributions to the further study on facial expressions.

2.1 Paul Ekman’s Study on Facial Expressions
