Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
What is code-switching? Hans Vogt in his article Language Contacts firstly put forward the term code-switching that it is a psychological phenomenon, instead of a linguistic one, which is caused by reasons not related to linguistics. Later, researches concerned with code-switching arise and has gained more and more researchers’ attention from various fields. Nowadays, code-switching can be summarized as “(Auer, 1998) the alternating use of two or more languages by bilingual or multilingual speakers within one conversational episode, either in the same conversational turn or in consecutive turns”. The researches of code-switching have associated with the following areas: sociology, psychology, linguistics, etc.. These disciplines have studied code-switching from various perspectives and have gained abundant valuable research accomplishments. Code-switching has been one of important topics in sociolinguistics. The studies related to it have extended to teaching field. Code-switching in classroom can be regarded as a kind of special phenomenon of code-switching. In recent years, researchers have attached more importance to code-switching in class. “The immersion teaching method” has been applied in domestic teaching field for a long time. First language was regarded as in some way an obstacle in the students’ target language learning process. However, in the practical teaching, researchers found that the transfer between first language and target language at proper time can promote teaching. Studies on code-switching in class abroad emerged since the mid-1970s. However, related domestic studies began very late, most of which are qualitative researches.

1.2 Significance of the Research
English has been taught in Chinese students’ classes for many years. With the increasing opportunities for culture exchange with overseas countries, there are more and more people preferring to learn English. Thus the major of English has been chosen to study by lots of students. As is known to us all that English majors need to study a number of courses within the framework of their program of study. Obviously, there are two languages existing in Chinese students’ classes. One is English and the other is Chinese, which is the first language as a teaching aid.
