1  Introduction

1.1 Significance of the Study 
There are a lot of articles, papers and theses on politeness, also we can see, nowadays some  articles  about  impoliteness  based  on  the  rapport  management  theory  occur  home  and abroad.  On  the  contrary,  articles  on  mock  politeness  are  barely  seen  domestically;  what’s more,  this  thesis  applies  the  rapport  management  theory  as  its  theoretical  framework,  and analyzes mock politeness based on the character utterance of Downton Abbey, which seems to be relatively pioneering and challenging in related realm.  This  thesis  attempts  to  analyze  mock  politeness  from  the  perspective  of  rapport management  theory  proposed  by  Spencer-Oatey,  and  writer  on  the  one  hand  uses  mock politeness to account for the different four aspects of rapport management based on a number of  corpus  selected  from  character’s  utterances,  which  is  also  one  of  the  innovations  of  this study;  on  the  other  hand,  in  four  chapter,  the  thesis  also  makes  some  research  about  how rapport management theory is able to account for the option and use of mock politeness, from the  some  perspectives,  writer  elaborates  on  it  on  the  basis  of  some  corpus.  If  it  works,  this theory  could  be  a  good  reference  for  analyzing  other  texts  whether  Chinese  or  English materials. Generally  speaking,  politeness  is  an  important  factor  which  could  maintain  the success  of  communication  or  interaction,  and  there  is  no  denying  that  mock  politeness  has also important communicative values during interpersonal interactions. In the fourth chapter, through  elaborate  examples,  the  thesis  has  presented  the  communicative  values  of  mock politeness.

1.2 Research Methodology
