Chapter One Introduction  

1.1 Background of the Research 
With  the  development  of  integration  of  global  economy  and  the  improvement  of Internet technique, a growing number of firms take advantage of media and Internet to publish their information in order to both sum up and tease a given period, usually one year, of merits and setbacks in their operations of management, community environment, customers and investors to improve their reputation and influence, especially construct a favorable image and establish a desirable relationship with their stakeholders. This trend in combination with multifarious negative news China is facing force most of the larger companies  including  state-owned  ones,  civil  ones  and  foreign-fund  ones  to  publish CSR(Corporation Social Responsibility) Reports with the attempt that corporations and industries  accept  accountability  for  the  social  and  environmental  implications  of  their operations. Corporations have responded to the public’s increasing sensibility to the external  business  activities,  releasing  an  growing  amount  of  information  about  the environmental  and  social  influence  of  their  operations  and  recording  their  efforts  to execute social responsibility principles. Consequently, new forms of CSR reports have emerged and have rapidly become standard annual practice among such enterprises. SFL  contributes  to  discourse  analysis  by  virtue  of  researching  language  from  the angle  of  the  interpersonal  meaning.  After  the  three  kinds  of  metafunctions  have  been proposed, plenty of studies on discourse analysis have been conducted to discuss how they  deliver  language  meanings  and  their  realizations  in  various  discourses,  among which  analysis  of  interpersonal  meanings  is  the  hottest  one.  Undoubtedly,  studies  on interpersonal  meanings  in  different  types  of  discourses  had  been  conducted  both  at home  and  abroad  such  as  autobiography  writings  by  Li  Zhanzi  (2000),  discourse translation  by  Zhang  Xiangang  (2007),  record  of  dialogue  by  Sultan  (1996),  and  oral English  classes’  dialogic  pattern  by  Coulthord  and  Sinclair  (1992).  However,  these studies  were  all  conducted  from  the  perspective  of  Systemic  Functional  Grammar, which looks on mood and modality as the main expressions of interpersonal meaning.
