Chapter One Introduction  

1.1 Motivation of the Study  
Chinese idiom takes an important part in Chinese language vocabulary and can be regarded  as  the  treasure  of  the  language.  With  a  certain  mystique  of  profound  and unique  cultural  semantic  meanings,  numbers  exist  not  only  as  mathematical  symbols, but also as cultural forms which reflect cultural thinking of Chinese people. When the numbers  appear  in  the  phrase  structure  and  constitute  the  numeral  idioms,  they  have not  only  the  original  meaning,  but  also  the  abstract  meaning.  Most  of  the  words became empty and no longer had the numeral objective sense, which needs to be paid much  more  attention  to  for  lexicographers  to  give  correct  and  comprehensive definition.According  to  the  traditional  definition  model,  the  concept  of  definition  in monolingual dictionary is to explain the given words or the items. And the concept of bilingual  dictionary  is  to  find  equivalents  to  the  target  words,  which  has  been  widely accepted by scholars. Then the single equivalence theory is formed and it is the result of  structuralism  and  great  contribution  to  promote  and  improve  compilation  of bilingual dictionaries.  In  lexicographic  field,  the  nature  of  CEDs  is  to  pursue  and  achieve  equal correspondence  and  conversion  between  two  different  language  symbols.  Affected  by this  kind  of  thought,  the  majority  scholars  proposed  certain  definition  modes  of bilingual  dictionaries,  such  as  translation  definition,  imitation  definition,  explanation definition, supplementary definition and comprehensive definition.

1.2 Significance of the Study 
On base of corpus of Chinese numeral idioms, this research analyzes the internal entry  structure  such  as  meaning  description,  examples,  and  at  last  provides  refining suggestions for the better treatment on Chinese numeral idioms definitions in CEDs.
