Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Rationale of the Research
This
thesis has chosen the definitions of “da” verbs in the LDCFL out of following considerations: (1) Definition is important and significant academically for learner’s dictionary. However, a lot of problems remain on the definition in many authoritative LDCFL. Many of LLDCFL use The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (CCD) for reference and imitate or copy its pattern. The lexicographical definitions in many LDCFL are almost the same as that in the CCD which is a general purpose Chinese dictionary designed for Chinese native speakers. Meanwhile, the definition methods are single, such as definition by synonyms, morpheme extended definition, antonym plus negative definition, etc. There are numerous problems between the content of the information items in definition and structure analysis, the semantic framework and the structure of conceptual definition, the meaning decomposition and the analysis of the semantic structure description, the simplicity of definition and the closedness of dictionary. CFL students need an adequate CFL dictionary, however, current dictionaries do not serve this population well, and the students still have to make do with inadequate tools (Tai-yuan Tseng, 1999). (2) Studies on definitions of “da” verbs in LDCFL take up much little space in the whole lexicographic field, which manifests the necessity to construct the new definition model for the definition of “da” verbs in LDCFL. The verb “da” is an entry which has the most senses in CCD, with a total of 24 senses, including word meaning and morpheme meaning. Given there are more than 214 entries containing the verb “da”, this paper only chooses the verbs to do a research, so the research object of this thesis refers to the verb “da” and common verbs containing the verbal morpheme “da”. On the study of polysemous verb “da”, previous scholars make their researches from the diachronic evolution or synchronic corpus perspectives, they analyze and discuss the pronunciation, form and meaning of “da”, and the meaning analysis of “da” is the most common and abundant .For native speakers, even if “da” is a very complicated polysemous verb, there are rarely errors in use. However, it is not easy for second language learners to study polysemies. Furthermore, the researches on the verb “da” are mostly limited in Chinese dictionary.
