1.1 Research Background
The emerging of the concept of multiliteracies is the result of social changes. People is in a period of hum an
history called the Inform ation Age, also known as the New
Media Age. Although “the Information Age” is no m ore a new-coined word since the introduction of the internet in 1991 and worldwide accessibility of the W orld Wide Web thereafter, people has never been such deeply influenced by new media as nowadays. The 21st century has witn essed the striking development of new media, which is advanced information technology superficially, but a brand new era of literacy su bstantially. One is surrounded by abundant in formation everyday and everywhere. W e have to adm it that the brand new era of l iteracy means new alleys into meaning creation and new ways of learning and communication. Things change in and out of classrooms, which brings chances and challenges at the same time nowadays. The key qualities of an e ffective learner are not only autonom ous, flexible, knowledgeable, but also being able to work pr oductively with linguistic and culture diversity. Students today are required to have the knowledge on accessing, evalu ating and making use of information gained through inform ation and communication technologies (Zhang Zheng 2011). Even in classroom settings, students are always surrounded by mulimodal environment. They are accessible to multimodal semiotics, which is much m ore than print-based modes. Multimodal classroom ecosystem is beneficial to students’ development of multiliteracies on the one hand, but also places m ore demands on it on the other hand. Compared with other subjects, College English has its particularity for its nature of being a tool for communication. The objective of College English is to develop students’ ability to use English in an all-round way especially in listening and speaking, so that in their future work a nd social interactions they will b e able to exchange inform ation effectively through both spoken and written channels. Education of the Ministry of Education 2007) W ith a vocational focus, Multiliteracies reflect th e expectations of College English Curriculum Requirments to a certain extent. Understanding and prom oting students’ multiliteracies is unavoidable for College English teachers, because this is closely related to students’ English learning situation and learning outcomes.

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance
This study intends to fin d out some truth about College English students’ multiliteracies, examining their ove rall awareness, leveling their abilities, analyzing multimodality and multiliteracies. Based on these, the study tries to conside r its im plications for multimodal teaching and learning in College English class. The research purpose lies in four specific research questions: (1) What is students’ awareness of multiliteracies? (2) Are students on different levels of multiliteracies? (3) What are students’common problems
