Chapter One Introduction 

1.1 Research Background 
Critical  Discourse  Analysis  (shortened  as  CDA)  was  first  proposed  in  the  book Language  and  Control  by  Fowler,  Kress  and  Hodge  in  the  1970s.  Since  then,  it  has become one of the most useful and influential branches in the field of discursive text analysis.  CDA  studies  the  ideological  significance  behind  the  language  structure  by analyzing  the  language  features  as  well  as  the  social  and  historical  backgrounds  of discourse to reveal the complex relationship among language, ideology and power. It regards discourse as a form of social practice: discourse not only reflects social reality but  also  builds  social  subjects,  social  relations,  knowledge  and  belief  systems. According  to  Tian  Hailong  (2009),  any  discourse  is  based  on  a  certain  kind  of ideology and the dispute of the meaning of a discursive text is the struggle for power within society. So CDA not only simply describes the discursive text but also reveals the hidden ideologies in the discursive text.  CDA pays special attention to public discourse, especially news reports because news reports are of significance in the emergence and promotion of ideology. Because  of  the  high  authority  and  easy  accessibility  of  newspaper,  it  plays  an indispensible  role  for  people  to  get  the  latest  news  of  certain  events.  Therefore, people  tend  to  make  the  conclusion  that  news  reports  are  accurate  and  objective. However,  news  reports  are  by  no  means  neutral  and  objective  because  they  are written  from  some  particular  perspectives  by  certain  journalists  who  intend  to  take advantage  of  the  power  of  language  to  express  their  ideologies  and  exert  great impacts  on  people.  So  it  is  advisable  for  people  to  read  news  reports  with  a  critical mind.

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance 
As Fowler (1991) has proposed that language use is not neutral and any form of language  choice  incorporates  ideological  meaning  and  the  language  used  in  news reports  is  no  exception.  Different  ideologies  on  a  certain  issue  are  likely  to  be conveyed through different language choices in news reports. From this perspective, a contrastive critical analysis on the news reports is highly necessary.
