Chapter One Introduction 

1.1 Research Background
State of the union address (hereafter SOTU Address) refers to the annual address presented  by  the  president  of  United  States  at  the  beginning  of  every  year.  The address  focuses  on  the  prior  problems  encountered  by  the  country  and  the  measures that are going to be taken by the president. It is United States tradition as well as the regulation  of  Constitution  for  the  president  of  United  States  to  deliver  SOTU Address.  The  original  name  of  SOTU  Address  was  called  the  president’s  annual  speech. Since the 20th century, the name of the State of the Union Address was adopted. On January 8th 1790, Washington, the first president of United States delivered a speech by  himself  which  was  called  Annual  Message  in  Congress.  Since  then,  it  became  a tradition  and  was  succeeded  by  his  successor,  John  Adams,  who  took  his  office. However, the 3rd president of United States, Thomas Jefferson who took his office in the  year  of  1801,  renounced  the  practice  due  to  those  complex  procedures  and meaningless  rituals  in  Congress.  Consequently,  written  annual  report  was  sent  to Congress  every  year  instead  of  delivering  a  speech  personally.  Since  then,  Annual Message  was  made  with  a  written  form  instead  of  presidents’  public  speech.  This form has lasted for 100 years. In  1935  Franklin  D.Roosevelt  initially  delivered  a  SOTU  Address  Annual Message  instead  of  using  SOTU  Address.  SOTU  Address  became  the  official  name of  this  kind  of  speech  when  President  Harry  S.  Truman  took  his  office.  And  SOTU Address has been used up to the present. The  Constitution  of  United  States  has  regulated  that  the  SOTU  Address  speech has no fixed date. However, it is normally given on the last Tuesday night of January every year. If it is the presidential transition period coincidentally, the SOTU Address will  be  made  by  the  new  president  in  February.  The  SOTU  Address  speech  usually spans about an hour.

In  political  speeches,  speakers  reach  their  aims  by  manipulating  language secretly.  Furthermore,  live  listeners  intend  to  grasp  the  real  points  of  certain politicians or policies of certain countries.
