CHAPTER ONE GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.1 Aim of the present study
This
thesis aims to investigate how abstract event structure influences the process of Chinese speakers’ language production. To be more specific, it focuses on the role of abstract event structure at the first stage of language production—Message Planning, exploring whether abstract event structure affects language planning. If so, how it influences speakers’ selection of information content and possibly its downstream effects on the linguistic locations of the conceptual information and syntactic structure at the second stage of language production—Linguistic Formulation.

1.2 Research background
In recent years, a growing number of studies have demonstrated that, besides the syntactic structure, conceptual structure also affects language production, A few studies have displayed bottom-up influences of conceptual information to the grammatical encoding phase of syntactic formulation during the process of language production. Tanaka, Branigan, Mclean, and Pickering (2011) investigated the effect of animacy on syntactic processing in Japanese language production and concluded that conceptual information (e.g. animacy) influenced how grammatical functions are assigned and the linear order of the words, namely animate entities often take the earlier positions in transitive sentences and animate entities are consistently being distributed to the sentence subjects in active or passive sentences when speakers performed in sentence recall tasks. This study supports the results that animacy plays a role in encoding syntactic structure found by other researchers (Ferreira 1994; Mc Donald, Bock, and Kelly 1993). Other conceptual features like concreteness, prototypicality, and prior mention in the discourse also appeared to affect the syntactic structure (Bock and Warren 1985; Kelly, Bock, and Keli 1993; Bock 1997; Bock and Irwin 1980). Based on these studies, at least, we can infer that conceptual representation is associated with variation in linguistic representation. Recently, in addition to these findings of bottom-up influence of conceptual information on linguistic formulation, some researchers also demonstrate top-down influences of conceptual structure on language production and thus they suggest conceptual structure also affects speakers’ early choices in choosing the information content they are going to describe.
