1.2  Purpose and Significance of the Study 
This  thesis  is  a  preliminary  attempt  to  apply  Fauconnier  &  Turners  Conceptual  Blending  Theory (CBT) to analyze the comprehension of irony extracted from Pride and Prejudice. And the main purpose of the thesis is to explore  the comprehensive mechanism of irony from a cognitive perspective  and  illustrate the  online  meaning  construction  of  irony  in  order  to  show  the  great  explanatory  power  of  CBT  for analyzing irony. And another incidental purpose of the present study is to have a better understanding of the irony art used by the author in Pride and Prejudice by analyzing the irony comprehension. When  it  comes  to  the  application  of  CBT  to  irony  comprehension,  the  following  two  benefits  are coming.  For one, it is a better approach of demonstrating the process of meaning construction of irony to apply  CBT  to  analyze  the  irony  comprehension  and  in  this  way  will  the  mechanism  of  irony  be  had  a deeper  understanding  and  thus  having  a  better  understanding  and  appreciating  for  irony  is  necessarily feasible. For another, a general examination of CBT? mighty power will be demonstrated by applying CBT to natural language and in this way the strengths and weaknesses of CBT in analyzing real-world language will be spontaneously presented and furthermore it is highly probable to strengthen the strengths and lessen the weaknesses to have an improvement of CBT.

Chapter Two Literature Review 

2.1 Definition and Classification of Irony 
Being  a  common  language  phenomenon,  irony  is  defined  with  a  little  difficulty  because  of  its complexities and the following is the detailed description of definition and classification of irony. Being  a kind of figure of speech or a simple language form by lots of traditional theorists, irony has been paid great attention by many scholars for centuries. Then here is the question “when did irony come into  being?”  To  solve  this  question  correctly,  it  is  complete  to  date  back  to  ancient  Greece.  And  the  first example of irony used was recorded in The New Encyclopedia Britannica, “the term ?irony? has its roots in the Greek comic character eirōn, a clever underdog, who by his wit repeatedly triumphs over the boastful character alazōn.” Being the masters of irony,  the ancient Greeks usually often use ironic utterances to achieve important philosophical purposes.  It was not until 1502 that the word  “irony”  appeared and the  widespread use  of irony is in the  early 18th century.
