How-to or tutorial blogs are becoming increasingly popular.  Travel  blog,  as  it  were,  is  a  type  of  tourism  discourse.  Tourism  discourse  is widely found in the services of tourism industry including all introductions in English concerning  travel  agency,  travel  services,  tourism  attractions  at  home  and  abroad, natural  or  man-made  landscapes,  catering  culture,  shopping,  transportation,  and regulations  in  tourism,  etc.  (Stoian  &  Dejica,  2016:190).  They  might  appear  in magazines,  hotel  guidebooks,  guidebook  of  countries  or  cities,  brochures  about tourism attractions, etc. The language used in tourism is a specific kind of language that  corresponds  to  the specific position  of tourism  in  the current  society.  With  the development and wide use of the Internet, English tourism discourse is more easily accessible than before. Travel blog is exactly one of the forms of tourism discourse accessible on the Internet. Moreover, travel blog is also known as travelog, which can be seen as electronic version  of  travel  writing.  The  definition  of  travel  writing  is  as  simple  as comprehensive.  Travel  writing  is  a  non-fiction  type,  which  typically  records  the experiences of travelers in some interesting places and circumstances (Santos et al, 2008:1006). It will include vivid descriptions, illustrations, historical background, and possibly  maps  and  diagrams.  It  is  given  an  equal  status  with  other  genres  such  as romance, action adventure, fantasy, mystery, detective fiction and so on.

Chapter 2   Theme and Thematic Progression in Written Texts 

This chapter reviews previous studies on Theme and thematic progression in written texts. The three metafunctions and different definitions of Theme are introduced first and  a  review  of  previous  studies  on  Theme  and  thematic  progression  of  different written texts follows. 

2.1 Theme 
The notion of Theme and Rheme was first proposed by Mathesius from the Prague school of linguists. Mathesius (1939:172) defines Theme as “the starting point of the utterance which is known or at least obvious in the given situation and from which the speaker proceeds”, and Rheme as “that which the speaker states about or in regard to the Theme of the utterance”. In other words, the Theme of an utterance consists of elements which express information which is known or obvious, or “something that can be gathered from the previous context” (Mathesius, 1939:173).
