 “consists  of  elements  that  express  something  new,  something unknown  from  the  previous  context”  (Mathesius,  1939:173).  Halliday  (1985:76) states that Theme is “the element that serves as the point of departure of the message; it is that which locates and orients the clause within its context” and Rheme is “the remainder of the message, the part in which the Theme is developed”. 2.2 Thematic Progression in Written Texts 
The concept of Theme and Rheme underlies Dane?’s concept of thematic progression.  Dane?  (1974)  is  the  first  one  who  brings  up  the  notion  of  thematic  progression patterns. Dane? (1974:113) describes thematic progression as “the choice and ordering of  utterance  Themes,  their  mutual  concentration  and  hierarchy  as  well  as  their relationship to the hypertheme of the superior text units (such as paragraph, chapter…) to  the  whole  text,  and  to  the  situation”.  The  development  of  Themes  and  the relationship between Themes and Rhemes relates directly to the coherence of a whole text. As a matter of fact, the way  that Theme and Rheme are  arranged in a clause which would finally form a coherent text is complying with certain rules. The way that  Theme  and  Rheme  are  organized  is  named  thematic  progression.  Thematic progression is a typical organizing principle of information in discourse and “deals with how the semantic and syntactic structures of the sentence function in fulfilling the communicative purpose intended for the sentence” (Firbas, 1986:57). Dane? stretches his conception of thematic progression into the textual level. He postulates five types of thematic progression patterns on the basis of a great amount of material, which are simple linear Theme, constant Theme progression, derived Theme, split Rheme and Spring Theme. Thematic progression is an important manifestation of  textual  cohesion.  Dane?  puts  great  emphasis  on  the  constructional  role  that thematic  progression  plays  and  the  contribution  of  thematic  progression  to  the coherence in the text.
