Chapter 5   Themes and Thematic Progression in the Data 

The analysis is displayed with the results discussed in this chapter. Firstly, the results of analysis of thematic structures are reported in three levels: interpersonal Theme, textual Theme, and experiential Theme. And then the results will be discussed after they are shown in details. Secondly, thematic progression is analyzed in a qualitative way. This chapter tends to explore the features and functions of Themes and thematic progression of the data. Interpersonal Theme, textual Theme and experiential Theme are three different components  in  Theme.  There  must  be  one  and  only  one  experiential  Theme  in  a clause. There are 3773 Themes in the data. Of 3773 Themes, interpersonal Theme and textual Theme are 119 and 688 respectively. The distribution of three components in Theme of the data is displayed in Figure 5-1. This  section  displays  the  distribution  of  interpersonal  Themes  in  the  data  of  72 English  travel  blog  texts,  and  then  describes  specific  features  of  interpersonal Themes. There are three types of interpersonal Theme: vocative (Harry, everybody, etc.), finite verbal operator ( do, don’t, is, have, etc.), and modal Adjunct (clearly, sure, in my opinion, etc.). The distribution of three types of interpersonal Theme is displayed in Figure 5-2.

Conclusion 

The thesis has presented an analysis of Theme and thematic progression patterns in English  travel blogs within  the framework  of  SFG. Concerning  thematic structures and  thematic  progression  in  the  data,  descriptive  method  is  used  in  the  analysis. Features and functions of Themes and thematic progression patterns are discovered. As is shown in the analysis, this thesis analyzes both the characteristics of thematic structures and features of thematic progression of the data in a descriptive method. The research aims to examine characteristics and functions of thematic structures and thematic  progression  in  English  travel  blogs,  which  are  reflected  in  the  research questions in Chapter 1: (1) What are the characteristics of thematic structure and thematic progression in the data? (2) How the features of thematic structures and thematic progression contribute to the flow of information and coherence in the data and help to implement the function of promotion of English travel blogs? As to the characteristics of thematic structures, interpersonal Theme accounts for 3%. Among these interpersonal Themes, “don’t” is the most used finite verbal operator in imperative clauses, which functions as a suggestion rather than an order in the data. Usuality is used in highest frequency to avoid absolutism and keep other possibilities. Moreover, it can help to arouse sympathy of readers.
