Chapter 4 Pragmatic Functions of Fuzzy Language in Social News 

In the previous chapter, the author has already analyzed fuzzy language based on the  theory  of  Cooperative  Principle  and  its  four  maxims.  Some  of  the  functions  of fuzzy language have been slightly mentioned. In this chapter, the pragmatic functions of  fuzzy  language  in  social  news  will  be  explained  in  detail  so  as  to  present  a  clear understanding of the theme of this thesis.  

4.1 Strengthening the Credibility of the News
It is widely known that credibility is one of the basic criteria of news reporting, while  fuzzy  language  contains  more  or  less  indeterminacy  and  uncertainty. Nevertheless,  fuzzy  language  is  not  in  contradiction  to  credibility,  in  turn  it  could increase the credibility of the news as well and offer more convincing messages to the public.  Therefore,  there  exists  a  lot  of  fuzzy  language  in  news  reporting  so  as  to increase  the  credibility  of  the  information  provided.  The  following  examples  can better illustrate this function of fuzzy language in social news.
