Chapter One Introduction
This introduction part firstly introduces the background of the whole study aswell as the purpose and the significance of the present study. Then, the overview ofthe
thesis is provided for a better understanding of the structure of this thesis.
1.1 Background of the Study
In the past three decades, a rapidly expanding body of linguistic and pragmaticresearch deals with a functionally related group of connective expressions commonlyreferred to as discourse markers (DMs). DMs are widely existed in dailycommunication and they serve as an important feature of both formal and informalverbal interaction. The proficient employment of DMs often represents the speaker’shigher level of pragmatic ability and a better understanding of authentic language.Previous researches of spoken corpora present that DMs are represented among thetop ten frequent word forms (Allwood, 1996) and are observed in continuousutterance on average every 1.5 seconds (Luke, 1987).Since the 1970s, scholars’ interest in the ability of utterance generation andinterpretation of DMs has increased gradually, generally in the pragmatic andcontextual level. The increasing interest has also attracted scholars’ attention to theelements of linguistic structure which seem to get involved into various utterancesdirectly. In the whole 1980s and 1990s, an extensive body of relevant research ofDMs enriches the detailed analyses of this language phenomenon. Scholars tend toanalyze DMs from a variety of perspectives such as language acquisition, languageteaching and sociolinguistic level. Based on the previous studies from scholars(Svartvik, 1980; Schiffrin, 1987; Watts, 1989; Holmes, 1990; Erman, 1992, 2001;Stenstrom, 1995; Macaulay, 2002, 2005; Fuller, 2003; He and Xu, 2003; González,2004; Muller, 2005; Tagliamonte, 2005), the studies on DMs now mainly fall intothree focuses: (1) the pragmatic application and acquisition by native speakers,focusing on factors such as individual differences in age, gender, social class andspeech context; (2) the pragmatic application and acquisition by Second Language(L2) learners, mostly centering on the similarities and differences as compared tonative speakers and their contributing factors; and (3) the DM application andacquisition across different languages, focalizing on the similarities and differences ofthe researched languages.

1.2 Purpose of the Study
This thesis is a corpus-based study which aims to explore the similarities anddifferences of the application of DM well by native English speakers and ChineseEFL learners. More specifically, the purpose of the present study focalizes onachieving the following points:Firstly, the present study aims to investigate the similarities and differences ofpragmatic functions of DM well by native English speakers and Chinese EFL learnersand to probe into the reasons for these differences.Secondly, the present study attempts to investigate the similarities anddifferences of syntactic positions of DM well by native English speakers and ChineseEFL learners and to discuss the reasons for the differences.Thirdly, the present study intends to explore how Chinese EFL learners mayimprove their application of DM well and to put forward the possible pedagogicimplications.To conclude, making a summary of the application of DM well by native Englishspeakers and Chinese EFL learners and providing the corresponding sugges
