For instance, Liu (2014)analyzed the speech delivered by Obama from the standpoint of critical discourseanalysis. From the perspective of cognitive linguistics, Sun and Chen (2007)identified and analyzed the persuasive function in the political discourse. Zhou (2010)employed the identification theory of Burke to discuss the identification strategies inthe English political public speaking so as to realize the motives of the politicalspeaker.

Chapter Ⅳ RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter first identifies the move structure of public speeches by CPLiAUand APLiCU, and then, based on the comparison of the word using and the discourselayout, the similarities and differences of the move and strategy employment in twocorpora are explored. Finally, the reasons behind are discussed, mainly from thecultural and ideological perspective.

4.1 Identification of Moves and Steps or Strategies

The present study is carried out in two stages: in the first stage, the moves andsteps or strategies in the political public speeches are identified and distinguished asobligatory and optional based on the communicative purposes. In the second stage,the contrastive analysis on the similarities and differences in each move and step orstrategy is conducted in the light of the word distributions in two corpora.In order to identify the moves and steps or strategies in the political publicspeeches, it is essential to find out the overall communicative purposes of the speakersand the local purpose each textual segment fulfills so that the patterns of politicalpublic speeches can be determined. The purpose of political speeches, as discussedearlier, refers to convincing people to take actions as the speaker expects, to changeradically their attitudes or beliefs or to weaken their current attitudes or beliefs (Grace,1995).
