Others such as pragmatic function words focuson the pragmatic functions; discourse connectives or discourse markers emphasizethat the “discourse marker encodes the procedural meaning not the conceptualmeaning in verbal communication, that is, the discourse marker does not contribute todiscourse meaning but only to impose constrains on discourse interpretation.”(Blakemore, 2002: 90)According to Redeker (1990), Discourse markers are linguistic expressions usedto indicate the relationship between an utterance and its immediate context, and underthe immediate discourse context, its primary function is to make the listener a specifickind of linkage to the upcoming utterance.Because there is little agreement on the identifications of discourse markers,Brinton (1996) gives us a common explanation on the features of discourse markersfor the recognition of the discourse markers. First, he states that the discourse markershave Phonological and lexical features, Semantic features, Functional features andthen he describes them in detail. According to his research, the discourse markerspresent phonological and lexical characteristics, the markers are “short andphonologically reduced”; they consist a “separate tone group”and “constitute differentset of forms, which are not easy to place within a traditional word class.” (Brinton,1996) Besides, he demonstrates the syntactic features of the discourse markers, theyare optional rather than compulsory and often “have no clear grammatical functionand occur outside the syntactic structure.” They don’t have propositional meaningsand they have many functions and can operate on several linguistic levelssimultaneously. At the end, he discusses the sociolinguistic and stylistic features of thediscourse markers. They appear with high frequency in oral discourse rather thanwritten discourse and often occur in informality discourse of the women’s speech.(Brinton, 1996: 33-35)From the above discussion, we could see that discourse markers are expressionsor short lexicalized phrases which can organize the text.
