According to the statistics ofcomplete collection of the Tang poems, the frequency of “一(one)”, “十(ten)”, “百(hundred)”,“千 (thousand)”, “万(ten thousand)” amounts to 2238 times in Li Po’s 1177 poems, 1.92 timesof other poets on average; 1875 times in Tu Fu’s 1482 poems, 1.27 times of other poets onaverage. The poets of the Tang Dynasty prefer to use numerals owing to not only the rhythmrequirement of poems, but also the unique artistic effect generated by numerals, which is alsoone of the fundamental reasons why this topic is chosen for this research. https://www.51lunwen.org/translation/ As is well known, therich cultural images and artistic conceptions contained in China’s ancient poems are oftenconveyed by the lexical fuzziness. And numerals belong to these sorts of words carryingfuzziness, which add to the artistic expressiveness of poems, such as expressing the quantity, theextent, the long distance or the long time. For example:一去二三里，烟村四五家，门前六七树，八九十枝花。In such a short poem, all numerals from one to ten successively come to the eyes of thereaders. The poet describes the beautiful scene of tranquil country in such a unique but effectiveway that we can see the vivid scene. But, how should we understand these numerals? What roledo they play? How should we translate them into English? These are what this paper concernsabout.Li Po’s poems are selected as the subject of the present research because Li Po is thegreatest romantic poet after Qu Yuan and his poems with concise and refined words, deepsignificance and infinite artistic images, are regarded as the classic of the poems of the TangDynasty. The second reason is that the percentage of poems containing fuzzy numerals in LiPo’s poems is much higher than in other poets’ poems. Besides, more English versions of LiPo’s poems are available for the research.

1.2 Aims of the Research研究目标

The thesis focuses on the study of numerals with semantic fuzziness in Li Po’s poems inline with the theory of fuzzy linguistics. The first aim is to make a general survey of thenumerals with semantic fuzziness used in Li Po’s poems by means of mathematical statistics.Then, it is hoped that the application of semantic fuzziness of numerals to poems can offersomething new about the poetry comprehension and can enrich the research contents ofsemantic fuzziness to some extent.The third aim is to explore English translation of numerals with semantic fuzziness in LiPo’s poems with special attention to the translation principles and translation methods, in hopefor providing some new methods of translating fuzzy numerals in ancient Chinese poems.
