摘要:本土译者追求气韵、神似的翻译倾向一定程度上弥补了西方译者准确有余、而气韵不足的翻译缺点。最终,本文认为,还原一个真正意义上的陶渊明诗文,需要中外译者共同努力,相互补偿。

Introduction

Even the shortest and most selective list of famous Chinese poets would have tofind a place for T’ao Yuanming, a poet who comes second before Li Bai and Du Fu inthe eighth century and after Qu Yuan in the third century. Born in the Six Dynasties, aperiod which saw the first flowering of Chinese lyric poems, T’ao is a great poet thatis able to touch people’s hearts. In his works, the poet depicts the leisure life of livingas a farmer-hermit. The several “farmstead” and eremitical poems are what help toconstitute an idealized man of letter in Chinese literature, and their lyricism is whatgenerally believed as the most eminent contribution that T’ao has ever made toChinese poetry. Nevertheless, the leisure side of the poet is just part of the story.Besides the so-called pastoral poems, T’ao also wrote philosophical poems (哲理诗),poems of feeling (咏怀诗) and poems on history (咏史诗), in which a much complexside of the poet can be detected. In fact, apart from standing “at the head of the great Chinese poetic tradition likea revered grandfather” (Hinton, 1993: 5), T’ao is also a person long been admired forthe purity of his mind. The quintessential episode in Pengze of his refusing to bowdown for a measly bushel of rice, as well as his several times’ renunciation of theofficial jobs after his taking them, becomes recurrent in almost any of his personalaccounts. What complicates the study is that with this charming character there is alsothe talk of his political complex and his philosophical understandings. All these revealthat T’ao Yuanming is more than a man of letter. He is a poet, while he is also a modelof character; he is a politician, while he is also a philosopher. The hundreds of years’studies into the literary figure also sufficiently testify that in T’ao there is great wealthto be found.Whatever the aspect of wealth that secures the admiration of Chinese readers,T’ao got his way into the foreign land in the late nineteenth century. Englishtranslation of T’ao Yuanming begins with Giles in his Gems of Chinese Literature in1883, becomes accessible in the hands of Arthur Waley, and gets ever popular through

Chapter One Literature Review

1.1 Studies on T’ao’s Poetry and His Personal Image

Contents and Styles of T’ao’s PoetryFor most people, past and present, the T’ao Yuanming that they remember themost in the literary world is the hermit who planks chrysanthemum at Eastern edgewhile leisurely seeing the Lu mountain, the scholar who dwells in a noisy place yet apure heart keeps him away from the rustle and bustle, and the “farmer” who risesearly to clear the weeds and plods home late with the moon. Just as Chen Hang haspointed out: “(most people) only know about the several pastoral poems such asRetuning to Live in the Country and Moving House in which the landscape is worthyof appreciation and the poet’s interest is quite clear; seldom would they search for hisother works such as Drinking Wine or Singing of Poor Scholars, let alone suchobscure poems as Imitations and Miscellaneous Poems. That T’ao is a leisure“farmer” is just taken for granted.” [陈沆,转引自钟优民,1981: 82]T’ao Yuanming’s works, in fact, are marked by a variation of themes.
