Chapter One Literature Review
1.1 Previous Studies of the Translation of Children’s Literature
Relevant Studies in ChinaTranslation of children’s literature is an important branch of literary translation.Though translation of children’s literature is still on the margin of academic studies, inrecent years, more and more Chinese researchers have paid considerable attention tothe translation of children’s literature, and their studies generally fall into five types:translation of children’s literature of particular periods, translators of children’sliterature, case study or comparative study of translated children’s literature works,translation of children’s literature from varied translation theories and translation ofchildren’s literature from the angle of adult translator and child reader. Detailedinformation is shown in the following table.The Finnish scholar Tiina Puurtinen is also professional in the study of thetranslation of children’s literature. In her paper Syntax, Readability and Ideology inChildren's Literature, she focuses on the ideological norms prevalent in the literarysystem of English and Finnish children’s books by discussing the frequency ofnonfinite syntactic constructions affecting readability and particular micro-andmacro-linguistic strategies informing ideology based on English source texts, theirFinnish translations and Finnish originals.The researcher from Germany Tabbert, Reinbert makes a conclusion that thereare four major factors that influence the studies on the translation of children’sliterature in Approaches to the Translation of Children’s Literature--A Review ofCritical Studies since 1960. The first factor is the perception that the translatedchildren’s books are the carriers of varied cultures; the second one is the challengesthat the translators encounter in the translating process of the source text; the third oneis polysystem theory which places children’s literature in an inferior position withinthe literary system; and the fourth one is the children of specific ages as the recipientsof the translated texts.
1.2 Introduction of Ren Rongrong and His Translation Career
As one of the greatest children’s literature translators and writers in China, RenRongrong plays an important role in the import of foreign masterpieces of children’sliterature into China. He began his career as a children’s literature translator in 1947,and since then, he fell in love with children’s world and devote almost his whole lifeto the translation and creation of Children’s literature. During the interview titled“REN RONGRONG, I AM BORIN TO BE CHILDREN’S LITERATUREWORKERS”, Ren Rongrong mentioned that he somewhat accidentally became achildren’s literature worker in 1947. In fact, there are many internal and externalfactors influencing him and gradually leading him to the road of children’s literature,including his growth background, his personal endeavor and the era and the socialenvironment he lived in. In the Chinese literary world, Ren Rongrong’s translation ofchildren’s literature is not only known for its quantity, variety, but also outstandingfeatures. His passion and love for literature and language aroused in a very young agehave served as great inspirations for his translation and creation, and his childlikeheart have endowed nearly all his works with children’s delight.
