t of all, language is equal to thought; secondly, language determines thought; thirdly, thought determines language; finally, thought depends on language and vice versa. In a word, language and thinking interact with each other. Translation is traditionally defined as the conversion between two languages. Following the study of the translation, the linguists and the translators increasingly realize that the different thinking modes between nations influence the translating level. Ignoring the relationship between languages and thinking modes will ultimately lead to some translation problems. What is more, a Chinese professional translator can not produce a good translation if he cannot go deep into the thinking mode of the corresponding target language. It is discouragingly found that few Chinese authors can obtain the Nobel Prize in Literature, failing to carry forward the Chinese cultures to the world. We should ponder upon the reasons for such literary regret. It is truly that cultural difference is one reason, and the other reason rests with our contrast in thinking modes. Those are the concerning problems of the writing of this thesis.
The paper mainly deals with the different thinking modes and the resultant influence in bi-directional E-C translation. It is revealed that the thinking mode is on the intimate terms with language. If we want to strengthen our translation skill and reduce the embarrassment, the transformation of different thinking modes between source language and target language is necessary. Of course, the proposals made in this thesis cannot solve all the problems encountered in the process of translation. However, it may shed light on the proper translation and provide solution to the previous problems and facilitate the bi-directional E-C translation to some degree.
