I. Introduction
Translation is an art more than a science. We cannot do without translation in international or even intercultural communication. Translation covers almost every field in our daily life such as education, sports, entertainment and business. Since English is most widely spoken and Chinese has the most speakers, there are a large number of essays focusing on English-Chinese translation or vice versa so far. In entertainment, movies play a very important part. First, there are a lot of movie fans around the world. Second, movies in Hollywood, the world moviemaking center, are almost originally English ones, blockbusters or not. In the recent several decades, the introduction of foreign movies enriches our lives, extends our horizons and builds a convenient bridge to cross-cultural communication. This thesis mainly deals with movie title translation from English into Chinese.
We know that movie titles are usually short with four to five words on the average. To express meaning in relatively a few words, Chinese is somewhat advantageous to English. For example, there are many four-character idioms in Chinese. On the contrary, the English language is short of this style. Longer expressions are used than in the original Chinese title. Additionally, the Chinese translation often has better effects, esp. its aesthetic sense. Such examples are numerous in Chinese. But on earth they own to different cultures. So we see that the English versions of those Chinese movie titles have lost some effects on them. Due to cultural and linguistic differences between these two languages, the English versions convey the movie contents, without the original aesthetic effects and tastes. Certainly, it should not be concluded that the translation of Chinese movie titles into English is easy and is not worthy of research accordingly. Anyway, to see how Skopos theory is used in movie title translation, this paper mainly focuses on the translation of English movie titles.

II. Skopos theory-based translation approach
Before we translate, we should first know clearly what the skopos of the target text(TT) is intended to achieve. With a clear purpose in his mind, the translator is approaching the required TT, not deviating from it. Skopos theory emphasizes the Skopos or purpose in a translational action. It is the core of the functionalist translation theory, whose essence is embodied by Skopostheory.
2. 1 Background
The two most important shifts in theoretical developments in the translation field over the past two decades have been the one from ST-oriented theories to TT-oriented theories and the one to include cultural factors as well as linguistic elements in the translation training models. Those advocating functionalist approaches have been pioneers in both areas. (Gentzler, 2004:70)Germany is the cradle of the functionalist theory, which reviews translation from new, different angles.
2. 1. 1 Functionalist Stages
The development of the functionalist translation theory mainly has three stages. At the first stage Katharina Reiss as its representative, who put forward the embryonic form of the functionalist theory. She found that some equivalence in translation cannot be achieved and shouldn’t be pursued sometimes. That is to say, the ST may have different functions from the TT.
