Chapter 1 Instructional theories and original text
This chapter presents the understanding of the original text in the background of original text, categorizes instructional theories of this translation practice and interprets them on the basis of textual and lingual analysis. It is widely agreed that translation and translation studies have been never so integrated and systematic in China since the past two or three decades. Today translation in China has become a more prolific, transparent, professional and honored activity than ever before and as a result of it, translation is taught and studied in colleges and universities as an academic subject. Translation has become a source of loaning knowledge (Halliday, 2001) and therefore are given importance at the etymological, phrasal and even syntax levels (Hoey, 2001) and we have a very developed theory on aspects of syntax ( Halliday, 1993). I literally agree with Haliday’s idea that for a linguist translation is how things are especially the interrelation between the text and the translation and the process of translation. For a translator translation theory is all about how things out to be and therefore they give more emphasis on the output of the translation instead on the process (Halliday, 2001).
1.1 Introduction to translation theories
Translation theory has a long
history but academically it came into being in 1983 as a separate entry according to international bibliography of Modern Language Association. One of the most famous theories in translation history is formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence theory (renamed as functional equivalence in 1969) founded by Eugene A. Nida in his book which named Toward a
Science of Translating. Scholar Peter who lived in the second half of 20th century, claimed that the main problem of translating a text was “whether to translate literally of freely”. Later, the American scholar, Eugene A. Nida (1959-1998) stated that translation itself was a kind of “science” and defined the translation concept as: Translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source-language message, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style.
