Chapter One   Introduction

1.1 Background, Significance and Necessity of the Study  
Robert Frost (1959) said that “Poetry is what gets lost in translation”. However, the famous  scholar  Susan  Bassnett  (2001:  57)  made  a  comment  on  his  statement  and  said “Poetry  is  not  what  is  lost  in  translation;  it  is  rather  what  we  gain  through  translation and  translators”.  The  former  implies  that  poetry  is  untranslatable,  while  the  latter, otherwise.  Though  it  is  difficult  to  translate  poetry,  many  translators  around  the  world have  tried  to  do  it,  and  quite  a  few  of  them  have  scored  tremendous  achievements. Many famous poems have been translated into other languages and received recognition and appreciation from scholars and common readers. For instance, the famous poem If written by the English short-story writer, novelist and poet Joseph Rudyard Kipling was translated  into  27  other  languages,  and  many  of  these  translations  were  taken  as teaching materials for teenagers to encourage them (Ji Xiaohong 2009). The  Chinese  poetry  translation  activities  have  also  attracted  the  attention  of translators  abroad  and  at  home.  The  Tang  Shi  poetry,  Song  Ci  poetry  and  Yuan  Qu poetry  are  regarded  as  the  three  heights  in  the  history  of  classical  Chinese  poetry.  In China, a large number of Tang Shi poetry and Song Ci poetry have been translated into foreign  languages.  Before  the  1960s,  western  scholars’  main  interest  was  in  classical Chinese  literature,  especially  on  classical  Chinese  poetry  of  the  long  period  from  the Zhou Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty (from 1046 BC to 907) (Liu Ruoyu 1975). After that, many Song Ci poems have also been studied and translated. However, few scholars and translators  have  paid  their  attention  to  the  study  and  translation  of  Yuan  Qu  poems,  a main literature type of the Yuan Dynasty. Today,  China  has  adopted  the  policy  of  enhancing  its  cultural  soft  power,  and translation  of  classical  Chinese  culture  and  literature  for  the  foreign  readership  is  a major  means  to  that  end.  The  transmission  of  traditional  Chinese  poetry  to  the  outside world calls for more academic attention and efforts on the translation of Yuan Qu poems.
