Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research background
With the rapid development of world economy, everything as well our language is changing accordingly. It is indisputable that an increasing number of new foreign words are pouring into our daily language like DVD, WTO, Windows, SARS, etc., through which we can realize a new phenomenon of language use, that is, more and more foreign words, including abbreviated words, acronyms and transliterated words, are directly or indirectly used in newspapers, government profiles, and our daily life. These words do put a great impact on our oral expression of corresponding objects. Yet, in April, 11, 2014, People’s Daily published an article “Abuse of Foreign Languages, No!”, objecting the phenomenon of obsessive use of foreign abbreviated words. In April, 25, 2014, another article “Why Zero Translation is Prevailing”, analyzes the current situation of zero translation and the reasons hidden behind. Even the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television of China (SARFT) issued the ban of using English abbreviated words early in 2010. From then on, the phrase “Zero Translation” became well known to both scholars and ordinary people. Zero translation is a native concept brought up in 2001 by Professor Qiu Maoru, but it was first used by Professor Du Zhengming in 2000. Du used this term to translate Buyi (不译) while Qiu brought up the Chinese term Ling Fanyi (零翻译) and also translated it into zero translation. It instantly became a hot and controversial issue. Due to the word “zero”, the term zero translation makes people easily think that it is non-translation, however, most scholars agreed on Qiu’s understanding, thinking that zero translation covers transliteration, omission and transference. When further analysis is done on the related literature, one can find that except for the new term there is nearly nothing novel, and the actual contents of many papers on zero translation are only studying transliteration or transference.

The research questions of this thesis are as follow: 1) Is the classification of zero translation reasonable? 2) What is zero translation in essence? Is it really translation? What is translation then? 3) What is the re
