摘要:本文是英语翻译论文,本文以接受美学为框架,采用例证分析的方法对李正栓的英译本《水树格言》进行分析。全文共分五部分,前言部分简述了孔唐·丹白准美的生平及其主要作品、《水树格言》研究的文献综述、接受美学理论及其主要概念。

With the employment of rhetorical devices, the philosophical and esoteric thoughts of the verses can be vividly illustrated and accurately conveyed so that readers feel no pressure to understand the meaning of the verses and can be easily persuaded to accept the ideas. However, the connotations of the rhetorical devices are usually culture bound, it might cause confusion for readers who have little knowledge of the source language and culture. In this sense, it merits translator’s attention to represent the meaning of rhetorical devices in an understandable and acceptable way to meet the horizon of target readers and evoke the same response of target readers as that of original readers. Simile is one of the typical rhetorical devices in which a comparison is drawn between two unlike objects in an explicit way with indicator of resemblance such as “like” or “as”. Simile is one of the most commonly used rhetorical devices both in Chinese and English, “but sometimes we have to look out not to let direct translation spoil the essence which comes out of different habits in making comparison between two nations.” 4 For example in the 78th gnome of the Gnomic Verses about Water (Hereinafter referred to as GVAW):

B. On the aspect of translation of idiomatic expressions
The translation of idiomatic expressions presents to be a tricky problem to be tackled by translators. The idiomatic expressions are usually popular phrases or sayings of one culture which are fixed in structure and rich in meaning. Idiomatic expressions are not peculiar phenomena to Chinese culture but also shared by foreign culture. However transplanting them in another culture is not quite possible since their figurative meanings are deeply rooted in their distinctive cultural contexts. The translation of idiomatic expressions therefore is not only a cross-linguistic matter but also a cross-cultural thing, so much so that when dealing with the translation of idiomatic expressions it is in a sense to bridge language and culture gaps.
