Reception  aesthetics  attaches  significance  to  the  active  role  of  reader  in  the reading activities. The enlightenment of reception aesthetics on the poetry translation is  that  the  translator  should  take  target  readers’  reception  ability  and  aesthetic experience into account during the translation process. In the thesis, the author gives a detailed  analysis  of  the  application  of  reception  aesthetics  in  the  poetry  translation through  a  case  study  of  the  English  translation  of  Gnomic  Verses  about  Water  and Tree by Professor Li Zhengshuan with examples given in Chinese and English version so  as  to  find  out  whether  the  target  text  manifests  the  main  ideas  of  reception aesthetics and how it is influenced by the role of target readers. Poetry  translation  not  only  concerns  about  transferring  the  original  content  but also  reproducing  the  original  form  and  recreating  the  cultural  flavor.  In  dealing  with the English translation of Gnomic Verses about Water and Tree, Li Zhengshuan takes great  efforts  in  bringing  forth  the  main  ideas  of  the  source  text  to  target  readers through  the  adoption  of  simple  and  common  expressions  and  habitual  language usages so that target readers have no difficulties in understanding the contents of the source text. Furthermore, the original gnomic verses are faithfully rendered in rhymed verse.  Meanwhile,  it  corresponds  to  the  reading  habits  of  target  readers.  Besides,  Li Zhengshuan  also  tries  to  maintain  the  original  Tibetan  cultural  images  and  religious features  by  choosing  different  translation  strategies  to  provide  target  readers  with exotic and fresh aesthetic experiences.
