2.2 Previous Studies on the Adaptation Theory    
Verschueren(1987,  pp.  45-48),  a  Belgian  linguist,  published  an  article  titled Pragmatics  as  the  adaptation  theory  in  the  “IPRA”  (IPRA  Working  Document)  in 1987, which indicated the birth of the adaptation theory. In 1995, he expounded the adaptation theory minutely and systematically in his book Handbook of Pragmatics and  Verschueren  is  the  chief  editor  of  the  publication.  He  believes  that  the  use  of language  is  a  process  of  dynamic  selection  of  language  for  different  purposes  and objects  of  communication.  He  describes  the  pragmatics  as  a  holistic  and  functional overview  about  language  and  defines  pragmatics  as  a  language  and  communication that  in  the  aspects  of  cognitive,  social  and  cultural  study  (Verschueren,  1995,  pp. 35-36).  In  1998,  Verschueren  published  a  paper  “A  Pragmatic  Model  for  the Dynamics  of  Communication”  which  mainly  studied  the  dynamics  of  adaptation  in the adaptation theory in the collected papers of Pragmatics: Critical Concepts edited chiefly by Asa Kasher. In 1999, Verschueren put emphasis on status and function of pragmatics  in  his  monograph  Understanding  Pragmatics  which  marked  the adaptation  theory  gradually  becomes  mature.  This  book  argues  that  pragmatics should be regarded as a perspective of research, which breaks the previous scholars’ opinion  that  they  takes  pragmatics  as  a  core  branch  of  as  linguistics  (phonetics, phonology,  morphology,  syntax,  semantics).  The  book  argues  that  pragmatics  is  a kind  of  perspective  or  overview  of  linguistic  function  and  pragmatics  is  not  only runs through all aspects of the study on linguistics but also considers language at all levels. Different language materials can be studied by using this perspective. This is a  revolution  in  the  research  method,  which  can  analyze  language  pragmatically  at different levels and reorient the nature of pragmatic subject.
