CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

To investigate the translation strategies and translation methods of Wang Wei’spoems, the thesis systemically analyzed Wang Wei’s poetry from the perspective ofSemiotics. Based on the commonalities among language systems, it includes allsubjective and objective factors among both verbal and nonverbal systems, which isdifferent from other single-faceted translation theories. Semiotics is the study ofmeaning-making, the study of sign processes and meaningful communication. Itconcentrates on the articulation of meaning. In fact, the kernel issue or nature oftranslation is the transference of meaning. This thesis will carry out a systematicallycomparative analysis of Wang Wei’s poetry and its English version under theguidance of semiotic meaning theory.In this chapter, research background andresearch significance will be briefly introduced, and thenresearch questions areproposed, followed by the illustration of research methodology andlayout of thethesis.

1.1 Research Background
With the development of cultural globalization, different cultures amongdifferent countries cannot develop in isolation but in connection. China has realizedthe importance of cultural exchanges and communications but stayed in an inferiorposition in the international community. As a bridge between China and the world’scultural communications, translation plays a crucial role in pushing forward theglobalization of China. Well translated works will lead to a better understanding ofChina and its culture. Poetry, as an important composition of Chinese culture, cantruly reflect the situation of a specific period. Thus, it is of great significance to studypoetry translation to help with the spread of Chinese culture.There are various approaches totranslation such as linguistic perspective, thecommunicative school, and the present cultural phase, etc. Among them, Semiotics has stood out as a prior concern as well as a promising approach totranslation.Semiotics is a science that studies“the production, transmission, exchange,and interpretation of messages consistingone or more signs”. In other words, it studiesthe system or structure of sign as well as how sign processes and functions. Differentfrom other translation theories, Semiotics concentrates on the articulation of meaning,and it breaks the unilateralism of the tradition research, considering all subjective andobjective factors among both verbal and nonverbal systems. Thus, this research willgive a new perspective for the study of poetry translation, Wang Wei’s poetry and itsEnglish version in particular.

1.2 Research Significance
Exchanging Chinese poetry is of great significance in the process of spreadingChinese culture to other countries since poetry is an important part of culture. WangWei, as one of the great poets in the Tang Dynasty, has enjoyed a great reputation athome and aboard, his poems being translated by many translators. However, fewresearch of English translation of Wang Wei’s poems has been studied.
