摘要:本文是英语翻译论文,本文拟在语用学理论的指导下,从语用意义和语境的视角出发,通过分析翻译中的语用事实和意义隐含来探讨小说翻译中语用等值的重要性与可行性,以及如何最大程度地实现语用等值。
yunderstand and adequately reconstruct the implicit meaning and connotative meaningof the original utterances in the specific context. They introduce pragmaticperspectives, such as Speech Act Theory and Cooperative Principle, into translationstudy; propose social and cultural factors should be integrated with these pragmaticnotions in analyzing the issues in translation; and hold that target texts (TT) couldachieve pragmatic equivalence in propositional information as well as in illocutionaryforce.Gutt (1991) brings forward Relevance Theory in his Translation and Relevance:Cognition and Context. According to him, translation is deemed as anostensive-inferential activity to source language (SL), a kind of communication act oflanguage, and a cognition process to look for optimal relevance. The task oftranslators is to convey the presuppositions and the intentions of the original writerand strive to make them match with the expectation of the target readers. Gutt alsofirst raises the notion of “direct translation” and “indirect translation”. The former isthe translation method faithful to the content and the form of the source texts (ST),while the latter rests with resemblance in cognitive effects.

1.2 Studies on The Picture of Dorian Gray and Its Chinese Versions
The Irish novelist Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), also known as poet, dramatist,
essayist and representative of Aestheticism, wrote the famous novel The Picture ofDorian Gray, which was first published in 1891. The novel is characterized by wittyparadoxes, epigrams, cleverly constructed plots, delicate depiction of characters’dialogues and psychological state, and full of vivid description of the depraved life,heinous crimes, divided personality of a young hedonist, as well as moral outlook andthe sense of right and wrong. All of these fully demonstrate Wilde’s versatility of hisinventive powers and the complexity of his social and artistic ideas.Nevertheless, responses from critics toward the novel at the outset were in anegative and critical mood for the reason that Wilde did not explicitly reveal his ownattitude toward the moral issues in the novel. At that time, the British press evenattacked that The Picture of Dorian Gray is a typical unwholesome poisonous productof French decadent literary trend and filled with the odor of immorality and spiritualdecay. Later, with passage of time and deep research into the novel, people graduallycome to savor the glamor and fascination of the novel that shows Wilde’s aestheticideas in essence. Irish poet William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) considered the novel as an extremely wonderful work in British
history. Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), awell-known detective storywriter, once argued, “I really do not understand why thereare some people deeming this great work as an immoral one”. Walter Horatio Pater(1839-1894) was an English essayist, art critic and fiction writer, and he commented,“The story in The Picture of Dorian Gray is featured by numinous plots and possessesprominent artistic values indeed”. Besides, the mainstream of literary circle and moreand more critics are inclined to view the novel as a piece of art declaration, a socialdocumentary, a moral fable, and even one of the most classical works in Britishliterary at the end of the nineteenth century.
