The Role of Documentary Data in Qualitative Research
Introduction
Qualitative research started in the 19th century and began to develop during the 1930s due to the prosperity of the social survey. Qualitative research implies grasping the principal characteristics directly and neglecting the differences in the number of a thing with the same qualitative characteristics for the time being. There are various types of data for qualitative research, such as documentary data, observational data and interviewing data. Among these different types, documentary data is the foundation and lead. Documentary data refers to social facts recorded of the past. It plays a critical and prominent role in qualitative research. It can help researchers comprehend the progress the predecessors made and obtain a clear direction for further research. This essay will discuss the main issues surrounding data collecting and analysis of this type of data. Firstly, it will give a definition and characteristics of documentary data. Subsequently, it will discuss the sources and search methods of documentary data. Following this, it will summarize the basic principles of documentary data collection and extraction. After that, it will look at the main advantages and constraints of documentary data analysis in qualitative research. In the last part, it will conclude.

To conclude, the method of documentary data analysis can simplify researchers’ onerous tasks and standardize the information processing and documents handling in the qualitative analysis. Document surveys function as a special and significant role in market surveys and it is the preferred way of collecting data regularly, or, rather, all market surveys start with collecting existing documentation. Only when the existing documentary data won’t provide a sufficient basis, researchers will give a consideration of the field survey to obtain observational and interviewing data. As documentation is both the principal treasures of human knowledge and an essential channel to understand the world of human beings in depth, document survey is the foregoer for general social survey. It tends to run through the entire process of social investigation. Just like other data types, the documentary data has its specific advantages and disadvantages. One of the most significant advantages is it beyond time and space limits, so researchers are able to investigate a widened range of social situations; while it can only get written information.
