1. Framework
LastFire Project methodology can be considered an invaluable and updated tool to face, with a performance-based approach, the fire risk connected with the operation of large atmospheric storage tanks. Authors of the present paper applied the LastFire methodology to several real cases in Italian refining installations (taking advantage of the support coming from a LastFire working group official partner) to verify the benefits coming form
the application of the method and the links between a cost analysis and risk reduction method and the major accidents risk Assessment enforced by regulation in the same realities. In particular to verify how the ‘‘traditional’’ Safety Report for major accident prevention (enforced by 2003/105/CE Directive (Directive 2003/105/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16, 2003) known as ‘‘Seveso III’’, as well as by the previous 96/82/CE
Directive ( Council Directive 96/82/EC on the control of major-accident hazards involving dangerous substances, 1996) known as ‘‘Seveso II’’, both issued in Europe as regulations for major acci-dents prevention) can be used as source of input data for the LastFire methodology and how the results coming from the cost-benefit analysis can be employed the support the Safety management system actuation. The article will illustrate the LastFire Project (copyright of the authors of the original docu-ments, References from Lastfire Project (1997a) to Lastfire Project (1997e ) and Lastfire Project Update (2005, 2006/2007)), a sample application, the software developed to assist the appli-cation of and then easily extend the field of application of the methodology itself. Fire risk Assessment has been based on the fundamentals of the LastFire methodologies, translated in an user-friendly software package. The software tool serves to speed up assessment activities as well as to verify different fire risk
reduction options benefits as well as to extend, will the same approach, the same general framework to other risk connected with tanks or even further to other facilities.

Fire risk analysis connected with specific accident scenarios has become an invaluable tool to determine the real safety level in place, to assure an effective protection level during design (also in order to avoid costly subsequent redesign) and to effectively integrate fire protection criteria and features into project specifications in case ofnew plants, revamping and modification activities.
