摘要:By empirical study, this paper explores an effective teaching method to alleviate foreignlanguage reading anxiety method. Due to the limitation of the study, further investigationsshould be conducted in the future. In the future, subjects from different levels are expected to beincluded.

alleviate the reading anxiety after thenegative impact of English reading anxiety on English reading had been recognized, but mostresearchers just give suggestions without exploration. Although CL has been regarded as themost effective one to alleviate foreign language reading anxiety, few systematically empiricalstudies employing CL to alleviate study reading anxiety have been conducted. Languageeducators and researchers have not been attracted to deeper research, either. And it is impossibleto apply all CL methods to teach. All those mentioned above give the author motivation to dothis empirical research by employing Jigsaw Ⅳ, a very representative CL method, to alleviateforeign language reading anxiety of non-English majors in higher vocational college. Incomparison to previous studies, the innovation is as follows:1. The study attempts to employ both quantitative and qualitative research approaches toexplore English reading anxiety experienced by non-English majors.2. Jigsaw Ⅳ which is employed in this study is more mature and suitable for Englishreading teaching than Jigsaw II.3. The author adjusts Jigsaw Ⅳ in the task dividing and learning result evaluation to makeit more suitable for higher vocational students.4. The author divides the experiment into three stages to adjust teaching to deal with theproblems occurred in the process of the experiment.It is hoped that this study could fill some blanks existed in previous studies in this field.Meanwhile, some effective directions are provided by the author to improve the overallteaching and learning of English reading of non-English majors in higher vocational college.Through the teaching experiment, the author manages to explore the effect exerted byJigsaw Ⅳ on English reading anxiety of non-English majors in higher vocational college anddemonstrate whether Jigsaw Ⅳ can alleviate their English reading anxiety and improve theirreading level.


1.3 thesis Structure

The thesis consists of five chapters. In chapter one, the background and significance of theresearch are illustrated, and the structure of the thesis is shown. The development of foreignlanguage anxiety and teaching method “Jigsaw Ⅳ” are briefly reviewed in chapter two. Theempirical study is described in chapter three which consists of the questions, research subjects,instruments and procedure. The purpose of this experiment is to find out whether theapplication of Jigsaw Ⅳ can alleviate English reading anxiety. The data of the experimentincluding the result of questionnaire based on the foreign language reading anxiety scale(FRLAS) and the score of English reading test are analyzed and discussed in chapter four. It isproved that the application of Jigsaw Ⅳ in alleviating English reading anxiety is feasible andeffective. Therefore, in chapter five, the author advocates the application of Jigsaw Ⅳ in thealleviation of English reading anxiety and summarizes the major findings of the experiment,significance in teaching and limitations of the study. Suggestions for further research are alsogiven in this chapter.
