摘要:In light of current situation,the present study plans to investigate morpheme "-ing"attrition of Chinese EFL learners, hoping to unveil features of morpheme “-ing” attritionand generate useful findings to complement language attrition study.

Chapter One Introduction


Since Conference on Attrition of Language Skills was held in 1980, researches on language attrition have continued to prosper for three decades,drawing comprehensive attention from researchers. Achievements made by those famous researchers, such as Bahrick,Olshtain,Weltens, Hansen,Tomiyama,Kuhberg, etc, all contribute to lay a comparatively integrated theoretical foundation for attrition research. With respect to achievements at home, language attrition research flourishes at a relatively slower pace, compared with that of language acquisition research.Nowadays, most Chinese learners commence English study since primary school, and go on learning English until they graduate from university, if they have the opportunity to receive higher education. Attrition erodes learners' existing language ability gradually and constantly, making learning English quite laborious. To Chinese learners of English, the worst outcome of language learning may be that some learners' language ability attrites with time to a minimum,despite the efforts they make in years. In view of such phenomenon, Chinese learners' attrition of English as second language has attracted the attention of domestic linguistic researchers.

由于在1980年举行会议摩阻语言技能,语言流失的研究继续繁荣三十年来,研究人员绘制全面关注。取得的成就,那些著名的研究人员,如Olshtain Bahrick,Weltens,汉森,富山,Kuhberg等,都有助于减员研究打下了较为完整的理论基础。就在家成果,语言流失的研究蓬勃发展的步伐相对较慢,而与语言习得研究。如今,大多数中国学生从小学开始英语学习,去学习英语,直到他们从大学毕业,如果他们有机会接受高等教育。磨损侵蚀学习者现有的语言能力逐渐不断,使英语学习相当费力。对中国英语学习者的语言学习,最坏的结果可能是,一些学习者的语言能力时间摩擦降至最低,尽管他们做出的努力,在几年。鉴于这种现象,中国英语学习者的英语作为第二语言的流失已经吸引了国内语言研究者的关注。
From the perspective of different language layers,language attrition consists ofphonetic attrition, vocabulary attrition and attrition of grammar, mainly in the form ofmorphology and syntax. In recent years,there emerge a few empirical studies conducted byChinese linguistic researchers,many of whom focus on lexicon attrition. Both at home andabroad,there have always been studies on the acquisition of grammatical morphemes, withthe aim to verify Krashen's "Natural Order" or other acquisition order ever proposed. Byreferring to previous research results,a domestic research on the attrition of 9 grammaticalmorphemes is successfully carried out, verifying Jacobson's Regression Hypothesis (Wang2010). Apart from that,there also appear attrition studies focusing on single morphemesand syntax, such as English morpheme “-ed” and negation structure. However,domesticempirical studies on Chinese EFL learners' attrition of single morphemes are far fromenough.
In light of current situation,the present study plans to investigate morpheme "-ing"attrition of Chinese EFL learners, hoping to unveil features of morpheme ‘‘-ing” attritionand generate useful findings to complement language attrition study. Theoretical groundsand research significance of the present study can be seen from the following perspectives;First and foremost,research on Chinese EFL learners' morpheme "-ing" attrition is anindispensible part of foreign language attrition study. The present study aims to analyzefeatures of morpheme “-ing,,attrition, especially from the angle of attrition sequence andfactors affecting attrition. Besides, research on the attrition sequence of morpheme “-ing”can be seen as another verification of Regression Hypothesis.
