1   Introduction

Vocabulary  is  a  part  of  the  three  core  elements  of  English  and  foundation  of  English learning,  also  is  the  constructional  materials  for  the  language.  One  essential  prerequisite  for learning  English  well  is  to  have  a  good  command  of  vocabulary.  However,  vocabulary teaching is not merely a key point in English teaching in primary schools, but also a difficult point. This paper introduces a new English vocabulary teaching method for children in China: Sandwich story methodology. Using stories as an effective way of second language learning is well proved in the literature on language development. Chambers considers storytelling as “a  technique  of  teaching  that  has  stood  the  test  of  time”.  (Chambers,  1970).  This  chapter inclines  to  introduce  the  background,  significance  of  the  study,  in  addition,  the  structure  of the thesis. 

1.1   Background of the Study 
English  Curriculum  Standards  of  Compulsory  Education  is  the  policy  guidance  of  the sandwich  methodology.  The  New  Curriculum  Standard  outlined  the  targets  of  English teaching in basic education stage in 2012. It was indicated that students are expected to have curiosity  about  English  and  become  interested  in  listening  to  English.  They  are  supposed  to read  and  understand  the  short  story  with  the  help  of  images  as  well  as  to  perform  simple pantomime  under  the  teacher’s  instruction.  Along  with  the  growth  of  age,  students  are expected  to  keep  curiosity  about  English  continuously,  in  addition,  they  are  hoped  to  sing simple English songs or nursery rhyme. In terms of vocabulary, children are obliged to learn from six hundreds to seven hundreds of words and about fifty idioms of their subjects when they graduated from primary school. The  primary  task  of  the  English  curriculum  proposed  in  the  “standard”  is  to  stimulate students’  interest  in  learning  English,  then  students  can  develop  good  learning  habits  and form  an  effective  learning  strategy,  meanwhile,  develop  the  ability  of  autonomous  learning and  cooperation  spirit.  The  value  orientation  of  the  course  is  based  on  the  development  of students and being students-oriented. The students’ learning determines the teacher’s teaching.
