Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Objectives of This Study
In order to investigate the effects of involvement loads on different types offormulaic sequences, three critical issues will be studied in this
thesis. They are (1)whether different task types result in different retention effects; (2) whether differenttask types lead to different levels of lexical knowledge; (3) whether different task typesaffect the acquisition of two different kinds of formulaic sequences.Enlightened by the theoretical contributions of comprehensible output hypothesisand involvement load hypothesis, this thesis aims to study different task types in L2formulaic sequence acquisition and evaluate which benefits the comprehensible outputof the lexical knowledge, so an empirical study is designed to accomplish the target. Toput it more specific, the three different kinds of tasks, namely blank-filling task, E-Ctranslation task and sentence-making task, are chosen in accordance with theirrespective involvement loads to develop three types of formulaic sequence exercises.They serve as the measurement of the comprehensible output in the process of targetformulaic sequence learning. The lexical approach will be adopted to teach the targetformulaic sequences before the three task types are given. Finally, an immediatepost-test and a delayed post-test will be conducted to research into which type of tasksbenefit participants’ acquisition of the given formulaic sequences most. The findingsare expected to offer some suggestions to L2 lexical acquisition with regard toformulaic sequences.

1.2 Significance of This Study
Formulaic sequences are widely used in both spoken and written discourse. It’sacknowledged that formulaic sequences are holistically stored and retrieved in ourmind and they can alleviate the processing efforts. Besides, frequent use of formulaicsequences will make one’s language more fluent and native-like. Therefore, learningformulaic sequence is often regarded as a significant factor to improve one’s Englishproficiency. In a word, formulaic sequences play an essential part in the L2 learning.Previous studies of the involvement load hypothesis focused on the acquisition ofindividual words but seldom verified this hypothesis in terms of formulaic sequenceacquisition. In those studies, the learning of formulaic sequences and that of individualwords were equally treated, but they are actually two different learning processes.While learners can acquire individual words incidentally, formulaic sequences can’t belearnt in this way for their complex lexical features. In this study, we attempt to teachthe target formulaic sequences to learners in the lexical approach rather than letlearners learn target formulaic sequences incidentally. Few studies have ever touchedupon the formulaic sequence acquisition from this angle.Practically, the result of this study will be beneficial to the future teaching andlearning of formulaic sequences. It will serve as a suggestion about how to effectivelyteach formulaic sequences and what type of task is useful to enhance formulaicsequence acquisition. In a word, this study is expected to be a guide for the L2 lexicalacquisition with respect to formulaic sequences.
