C. Based on Its Features
Language teaching begins with the spoken language. Material is taught orally before it is presented in writing form. Therefore, the Situational Teaching Method can create scenes to help students comprehend kinds of materials. For example, when teachers teach the word “blackboard”, they can use the substance and teach pupils how to read and speak, then write the word on the blackboard and read it again. By doing like this, pupils can use this word when they see the blackboard. These materials can be found easily in the classroom, so teachers can make use of these materials to create scenes.
The target language is the language of the classroom. As for the English class, English ought to be the classroom words. It creates the environment in which students can feel the atmosphere of learning English. If the English teachers use Chinese from the beginning to the end, students will get accustomed to thinking in the Chinese mode of thinking. Students always meet this situation that they can express something fluently and quickly when using their mother tongue, or think ideas teeming in one’s mind in Chinese. But when they try to use English to think and express something, they will be disappointed at themselves and do not know how to use the words which they have learnt. For example, a friend has this experience that he has studied English for a long time when he is in senior high school, and one day the English teacher asked them to crack a joke in English. All of them looked blank, because they did not know how to express the joke in English even if they knew many jokes. They can say something in Chinese at ordinary times. Why? Now he realizes the problem. Because they are accustomed to considering something in the Chinese mode, and they always translate the Chinese into English when they meet all the situations which related to English words. The teacher always explains something in Chinese at the English class, and they also think it is good for their comprehension. In fact, this kind of teaching method is bad for the English learning, so teachers have better use English as the class language in the English class. Maybe pupils are not adapted to this way at the beginning, but after a period of time students will be used to teachers and can ask and answer questions with simple English sentence.
New language points are introduced and practiced through the scenes. The new points are always hard to pupils. If teachers use scenes to explain them, pupils will understand easily and quickly. On the other hand, students will comprehend difficultly. For example, teachers teach students the parts of human body; they can teach it with the aid of picture or drawing. The object teaching can help pupils to remember and understand. The object teaching is proper for pupils, because students are very young, and their memory or comprehension is immature. Teachers create scenes by the audiovisual aids which can promote pupils’ enthusiasm of English learning. Students also feel that the class is very boring, and then they will not be interested in the English class. If teachers only teach pupils to read these words mechanically, they will fall asleep and talk at the class, so the situation should be created on the English class.
