b.Looking attentively
Looking attentively is that eyes gaze at students for a quite long time. It is divided into serious looking,intimate looking and necessary looking. In examination,teaches usually adopt serious looking to press pupils’ intention of copying. Nevertheness,intimate looking tends to be used in class. On the moment teachers stand on the platform with sweet eyesight,pupils will feel spring breeze. The excellent beginning indicates the starting of one joyful class. If some pupils feel nervous,the eyesight with smile will get rid of their worries. After answering a puzzled question,pupils get teacher’s soft eyesight,superior to the praises “Good!”“Wonderful!”
2.Teachers’facial expression
Facial expression mirrors human’s feelings,such as joy,anger,sorrow, love,etc. As American psychologist Albert noted,“Seven percent of information is from characters;thirty-eight percent from tones;fifty-fifty percent from facial expression.”(Chang Chunlin,2004:202) For outstanding pupils,their attention largely concentrates on teachers’face. Thus the rich and proper facial expression of teachers advances pupils to absorb knowledge unconsciously. But if teachers are dumb as a wooden chicken or as cold as ice,difficulties will appear between teachers and pupils,let alone teaching output.
3.Teachers’ gesture
Using gesture exactly can not only transmit message and express emotion but also reinforce the power of persuasion and influence. In class,teachers take advantage of gesture to explain what they intend to teach. For example,when illustrating the word “jacket”,teachers can point at some pupil who wears jacket. In this way,pupils can understand the meaning of “jacket” better. Furthermore,there are some simple gestures,such as “Come here!” (stretching one hand forward and the centre of the palm backward,and waving towards teachers themselves),“ It is OK!”(holding up the thumb) and so on.
However,any matter has two sides, the case is true of teachers’gesture. As a result, teachers need to desert negative gestures. For example,avoid pointing at somebody with forefinger because it brings pupils an impolite impression;refuse endlessly knocking at the desk,for this diverts pupils’attention and causes their dissatisfacion;resist putting hands in trouser pocket,as this gives pupils a lazy and arrogant feeling;abandon clenching fist to voice indignation,for that leads to pupils’terror and widens the gap between teachers and pupils.
4.Spacial distance
One American scholar once said,“Spacial distance can also send message.” According to the survey,everybody has his own space need. Usually,most of people own four spaces:close space(15-46cm),private space(46cm-1.2m),social space(1.2m-3.6m),and public space(over3.6m).(Julius Fast,1971:20) Pupils are the same to the most of people,having their own space need. Thus in the classroom teachers’ position affects pupils’ mentality and brings about various effects. When some pupil wanders in class,if teachers walk towards him,this situation will quickly disappear. Besides,as doing dictation,teachers had better adopt the method that they are moving around while dictating. In this way,teachers can adjust the dictating speed as well as warning pupils having an idea of copying.
