C.The application of students’body language in English teaching in primary school
Because English teachers properly apply body language to lecture,the explanation of English is simple and obvious,which represents that applying body language can make up for disadvantages of verbal language. In addition,body language is one real reflection in nature form. Therefore,teachers can make full use of this point to know pupils’body language. According to pupils’characteristics,teachers only need to understand pupils’eyesight,facial expression,gesture and posture.
1.Students’eyesight
As those mentioned above,teachers’eyesight directly affects pupils’attitude, mood and inspiration.Conversely,pupils’eyesight reflects teachers’teaching effect. As sayings are going,“Eyes are the window of heart,”“Human speaks with eyes as much as with his tongue. In spite of not looking up in a dictionary,people can see anything from one’s eyesight.” All these prove that teachers need observing pupils’eyesight in order to attain teaching information. When pupils are thinking about something,they will squint with half-open eyelid, that is because people usually present this sight in meditating. Besides,if pupils’sight focuses on teachers,they should feel happy because this case exists only when the class is very successful. In this case,teachers should make further interpretation in time and get rid of pupils’doubt. Then through the direction of pupils’eyesight teachers can know whether pupils are listening,thinking or not. And casting a sidelong glance suggests that pupils doubt and distrust their teachers.
2.Students’facial expression
Facial expression is an external form of expression of feeling or mood. Generally speaking,facial expression means action,state,physical change of face,such as winking,frowning,blushing and so on(Li Jiequn,2002:8). Teachers can analyze pupils’ mentality by facial expression. Take surprise for instance,pupils tend to open mouth and raise their eyebrow. However,closing mouth suggests that pupils are making decision;being in a blue mood indicates that pupils are going to lose their temper;slightly raising eyebrow and opening eyes together with the upper lip upwards stand for inquiry;frowning often forecasts disagreement;blushing proves to be shy. Those facial expressions need attain teachers’ attention in order that they can better the way of teaching and win pupils’ support.
3.Students’gesture
Owing to the limit on the special class occasion,pupils can not express their internal ideas in words at their pleasure. But as the main part of body language,gesture directly reflects pupils’real attention. Teachers watch pupils’gesture and find out their ideas better,which cause techers to adjust the content or method of lecturing.
