Chapter 1 Introduction 

1.1 Background of the Study

In  recent  years,  one  of  the  most  heatedly  debated  topics  in  the  academia  of  English teaching  and  learning  in  China  has  been  phonics.  According  to  Wikipedia,  phonics  is  a method  for  teaching  reading  and  writing  of  the  English  language  by  developing  learner’ phonemic  awareness  –  the  ability  to  hear,  identify,  and  manipulate  phonemes  –  in  order  to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns that represent them.      The reason why phonics has been so controversial is two-fold: on one hand, people are not sure about the efficacy and efficiency of this new method; on the other hand, people are reluctant to abandon traditional methods of English learning and teaching altogether. A closer examination of how we learn English both at school and at home shows us that traditionally  we  have  centered  on  repetition  and  rote  learning.  Take  how  elementary  school students study English for example. The way they have been building up their vocabulary is through listening to the teacher and then repeating several times afterwards. This is how kids are  taught  to  learn  English  words  at  school  most  of  the  time  and  the  next  step  is  for  kids  to learn the words by heart through whatever way they can come up with. Based on the fact that a  majority  of  Chinese  English  learners  are  floundering  in  their  English  learning,  most  of whom  cannot  even  pronounce  the  simplest  words  correctly;  it’s  fair  to  conclude  that  our traditional  way  of  English  learning  has  been  insufficient  in  almost  all  aspects  of  English learning.  Indeed,  it  is  a  way  that  requires  a  great  deal  of  time  in-puts yet that produces little yields in return. In rural areas  of  China,  a  lack  of  resources  and  qualified  teachers  has  made the situation even worse, and students from those parts of China can neither speak nor write in English.evertheless, as globalization is sweeping through the world, people from every corner of the globe are undoubtedly becoming increasingly connected with one another. We now live in  a  time  where  education,  information  and  knowledge  are  valued  more  than  anything  else.
